Mississippi Commission Pulls Plug, Manager Nunez Refuses To Follow, Guzman-Campbell Bout Scratched!
Michael Marley
BREAKING NEWS FROM BILOXI

9/13/2008

Joan Guzman laced up his boxing boots. Despite being treated in a Biloxi hospital for extreme dehydration for Friday night, after failing to make the 135-pound lightweight limit for a challenge to WBO, WBA and IBF champion Nate Campbell, the undefeated Dominican figher wanted to climb into the Biloxi ring on Showtime.

But the Mississippi State Athletic Commission, under Chairman Jon S. Lewis, produced two doctors who refused to permit the non-tilte bout to continue. And then, quite dramatically, Guzman manager Jose Nunez fell on his own sword.

“I told Joan, I will not follow you into the ring. It’s not the right thing. It’s the wrong thing to do and I can’t go along with you on this. Your career is still brilliant. Your career will continue. But I must agree with the doctors that you cannot risk your life for one fight. If the doctors say you cannot go, I have to agree with them. We will move on from here.”

As late as 8 pm CDT, host Beau Rivage or at least its Theater Box Office promised that Campbell-Guzman would go on as a non-title bout. If not, a woman at the box office said, paying customers would be refunded their entire ticket purchase.

“Another possible explanation is that Guzman simply did not have the motivation or desire to shed those extra few pounds, knowing that in so doing it would weaken him going into the fight. Given that he would have known how much weight needed shedding with a week to go to the fight, and given that there seems no physical reason why he could not make the higher weight, this explanation seems fairly plausible. It seems even more likely when past lapses in Guzman’s professionalism are noted, such as his failure to secure a visa in time ahead of the mandatory defence of his WBO 130lb belt against Alex Arthur earlier in the year. That he did not want to fight Arthur is understandable, however he had a contractual agreement to do so and that he did not fulfil this obligation is solely down to him. Was the whole visa farce a way of masking difficulty making the weight? It certainly seems a possibility. Either way, if he has not really tried to shed those pounds then he is, to be blunt, a cheat.” Quote from M.Gregory of EB…

“ In the last 5 years Guzman has racked up a total of 8 fights. That is a whole 4 fights less over the same period than the man Guzman and his fans seem to be obsessed with, Manny Pacquiao. Given that Pacquiao’s fights have been against the likes of Barrera, Morales and Marquez whilst the standout names on Guzman’s ledger are Barrios and Soto – good fighters, but at least one level below Pacman’s opposition – then you have to admire the temerity of Guzman in accusing the more active, better matched Pacquiao of ducking him. Isn’t it meant to be the up and coming challenger who matches himself tough and fights regularly in order to get a shot at the number one? “ Quotes from M.Gregory of EB…

I am waiting to quote Pedro F…to defend Joan…

Joan lost the opportunity to snatch the best belts of the Division other than his…the 3 belts waiting for him has been put to waste. Nate has put an exclamation point on Guzman’s 0 losses…now, it’s not a blemish, it’s 0 losses is a farce…he don’t deserve to be given a chance to fight Nate again…he doesn’t deserve it…he didn’t work hard for it..it’s unfair to Nate…

Im upset. I could have my prediction right, I waited for Nate to put blemish on 0 losses of an opponent put against him…

Joan doesn’t even deserve Marquez…

the saying is true to its words, "people who talk too much are scared and hide from their words" in boxing, the fists do the talking...Joan is plenty of talk...Pretty Daddy taught him well...

Give the runningman a brake . Blame his dumbass trainer Gayweather Sr who failed to monitor his progress . Guzrun should be fighting at 155lbs . Roach should hire him as a sparring partner for Pacman .

Well well well guys dont get angry about this, there is no one to be blamed rather that this Guzrun himself...He has no future in higher weight class as I say...
Better join him and let him train for Track and Field qualifiying tournament that's the better way to make him fame.

The finger pointing and blame for the cancellation has reached complete absurdity. It starts with the source as far as I'm concerned, Guzman failed to make weight. There's nobody else to blame.

It's ironic that this fight was canceled because Guzman didn't do enough running.
