Injunctioned Denied! Pacman PPV Show Rolls On! Even Judges Read Boxingconfidential?

Michael Marley

COPENHAGEN--A state court judge sitting in Las Vegas (Clark County) has denied Golden Boy Promotions application for an injunction which would've put the brakes on Top Rank's big April 14 San Antonio PPV boxing show starring Filipino sensation Manny Pacquaio.

This comes as old news to Boxingconfidential readers who were informed that the request by GBP was such a longshot that its chances of getting the preliminary injunction were "slim and none, and none is out of town."

Do you think, perchance, the Nevada judge is a Boxingconfidential fan/reader? I wouldn´t be shocked since nearly all of boxing's real power brokers click on to Boxingconfidential numerous times each day. Maybe that is why one premium cable network executive's only criticism of our site, only four months old, is that is "too inside." Geez, we really hate such "criticism," lol.

Here's how I prognosticated and analyzed GBP's application to the court:

“So much for the legal mumbo jumbo. What you want to know, boxing fan/Pacmaniac or both, is what are the chances Golden Boy Promotions request before a Nevada judge sitting in Clark County (Las Vegas) has in stopping Manny Pacquaio fighting Jorge Solis April 14 in San Antonio.

The chances are slim and none and, as the old line goes, slim is out of town. No judge is going to prevent Pacman from earning a living because of the ongoing legal dispute over his promotional rights between Oscar De La Hoya and Bob Arum. The Top Rank card will go on as scheduled April 14 although the news about GBP’s seeking to put a screeching halt to the card may hurt Arum with potential sponsors and other third parties who do not want to get dragged into the matter. There is also a chance that GBP could get some of Top Rank's income from the PPV show in Texas tied up but that is another slim reed.

I don’t think GBP can show "a probability" of success on the merits because which promotional contract is valid is an issue that will, if the case keeps going, be decided by either a judge or a jury...

Yes, in fact Philboxing.com cited Marley's comment in its injunction story early today.

Pacquiao floats like a butterfly
COMMONSENSE By Marichu A. Villanueva
The Philippine Star 03/23/2007

It was American boxing legend Mohammad Ali who described his fighting style — "floats like a butterfly" but "stings like a bee."

I am not just sure if ourvery own world super featheriweight boxing champion Manny "Pac-man" Pacquiao has been inspired or influenced by Ali. I have watched on TV the past severalboxing matches of Pacquiao, here and abroad, when he won and when he lost. Pacman’s sharp puncVhes "sting like abee" for sure.

Pacquiao, however, does not have the flair of footwork which Ali had that was the trademark fighting style of the wily boxer when he "floats like a butterfly" to go around, to frustrate and tire outhis opponent. He may not "float like a butterfly" in the boxing arena but Pacquiao, at this early stage of his plans to enter the political arena, has already come out from his cocoon.

I was really surprised to find out that Pacquiao, barely a month after taking his oath as a Liberal Party member (LP), is now with the Kabalikat ng Mamamayang Pilipino (KAMPI) party of President Arroyo. Pacquiao was sworn intoKAMPI before he flew to Los Angeles last Saturday to resume his training for his upcoming boxing match with Mexican boxer Jorge Solis.

Pacquiao, a prizefighter, is definitely a prize catch for KAMPI. In fact, KAMPI has obviously chosen to forgive and forget Pacquiao’s flip-flapping attitude for previously making fools out of its party leaders led by their president Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Villafuerte. If you recall, KAMPI leaders headed by Villafuerte were all waiting for Pacquiao to show up at his scheduled oathtaking on Feb. 12. But no Pacquiao showed up. They would learn later from media reports that Pacquiao proceeded instead to Manila City Hall and took his oath as LP member before Mayor Lito Atienza.

Immediately after his oathtaking as LP member that day, Pacquiao announced hisdecision to run for Congress instead ofjoining the mayoralty race in the local elections on May 14. Atienza, who heads the LP wing that supports the Arroyo administration, reluctantly endorsed Pacquiao’s bid. But even then, Atienza expressed his preference and advice to his protégé to just concentrate for now on his boxing career since the deadline for the filing of certificates of candidacy on March 29 is still a month away at that time.

But apparently, Pacquiao has already made up his mind to run and found KAMPI as more receptive to his political ambitions. Pacquiao said he could no longer ignore the pleas of his townmates in Gen. Santos City urging him to become a public servant and not just a popular public idol. After being sworn in with KAMPI, it was immediately announced that Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao is the administration’s official candidate for the first congressional district of Gen. Santos City.

Atienza, to his credit, has not taken this against his flip-flopping ward for junking LP in favor of KAMPI. "He (Pacquiao) still has my 100 percent support. That is his decision and I understand it," Atienza told me the other day. The Manila Mayor even defended Pacquiao, citing that the latter should not be branded as a political butterfly because he was forced by circumstances to abandon the political party he originally joined. Like many LP candidates preparing for the May 14 elections, Atienza pointed out, Pacquiao is among those in limbo due to the unresolved LP intramurals.

The Supreme Court last week has remanded or tossed back to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to resolve the case involving the leadership row in LP between the camps of Atienza and Sen. Franklin Drilon. The pending case at the Comelec is the petition by the Drilon camp that sought to nullify the election of new LP officers led by Mayor Atienza.

The leadership row of the LP, it would be recalled, erupted a few months after Drilon led some LP stalwarts in breaking off alliance with the Arroyo administration in July 2005, with the resignation of the so-called "Hyatt 10" Cabinet members who joined the ouster calls against President Arroyo. And the rest, as they say, is history when other LP-card bearing members in the Arroyo Cabinet like former presidential chief of staff Michael Defensor joined forces with Mayor Atienza whom they elected as the new LP president to replace Drilon. With barely six days left before the deadline for the filing of candidacy for the local elections, Atienza lamented LP has been losing a number of its members like Pacquiao to KAMPI and other parties due to the still raging LP leadership row.

For now, we can only hope that Pacquiao is more focused on his training to keep him in tip top shape by the time he goes up the ring on April 14 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. He will defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) international super featherweight championship title and keep the belt from being grabbed away from him by Solis who has no record yet of losing a boxing bout.

A victory over Solis would be Pacquiao’s ticket to get a crack to beat the Mexican boxer, Juan Manuel Marquez who is the current WBC super featherweight champion. I am no boxing expert but boxing buffs among editors at The STAR told me they are confident of a Pacman victory. But if Pacquiao fails to knock out Solis during the first five to six rounds of their scheduled 12-round bout and the match stretches on, they fear possible defeat of our "pambansang kamao." When I asked why, they pointed to the distracted attention of Pacquiao on politics.

Political pundits believe that a victory over Solis can ensure that Pacquaio’s winning streak is carried all the way to his congressional bid in the coming May 14 polls. Thus, Pacman can’t afford to be training so loose for Solis.

GOLDEN BOY should just give up the court case and let Manny feast on their fighters. Both promoters will make big money guaranteed.

On Mr. Marley's previous article regarding the injunction filed by the GBP, I commented that it was a bad move on the part of GBP and that it would be a knockout win for Top Rank. I was right. On Ms. Villanueva's article above (Pacquiao floats like a butterfly) Pacquiao's initial party affiliation with the LP and later with KAMPI was entirely a scripted show. From the very start I knew his joining with the LP was just a sort of decoy to condition the mind of the Filipino people that both Mrs. Arroyo and her husband were not behind Pacquiao's interest in politics. Mrs. Arroyo knows her days are numbered after the election on May 14 and the best she could do was to entice every winnable candidates they could muster to shore up if not maintain her supporters majority in Congress. To get a hold of the Senate that has been critical of her actions in government, she had to pick two actors to complete her senatorial line up only to learn the same actors are currently at the tail-end of the various election surveys. When Manny Pacquiao was booed in Cebu, that must have been a tremendous impact to him hence the report he was teary eyed. After that Manny became ambivalent whether to run or not. But the pressure must have been so strong that he finally decided he has to run. On Solis fight, Manny will become more intent to win this fight if only to show to one and all that he is still Manny Pacquiao. He will win by TKO in my reckoning.

It is your fault Michael Marley why I'am now a voracious boxing confedential blogger co'z of your colorful insights and non-bias presentations.Hopefully,I can still visit regularlly your boxing site when I go home to the Philippines from Thailand to resume my (less rewarding)job. I just hope and pray that PACMAN will emerges as winner in his coming fight with Solis, but rest assured that I won't vote for him in the coming election(I will serve as election board of canvasser)in our hometown in South Cotabato. Many bloggers said we are pacman haters and we have crab mentality actually we care and love Manny we just don't want his golden image and good personality to be used and dragged by evil politicians. We are not born yesterday we know philippines politics including rampant curruptions among elected officials in our government, hopefully if ever elected Manny will not be among them and will set himself as a shining example in the government just like in the world of boxing. See you in the Philippines Marley Boy....Mabuhay!!!!

pacquiao will realize his foolishness come 14th day of april and may, two knockdowns in a row in one date in two successive months... the only consolation is that, he will rise from those defeats and forget those bad experiences and stay away from leech and opportunists around him and will concentrate on his career until his retirement and eventually he'll be a hall of famer...

Surely pacquiao will be KO by Solis and will be KO again by Darlene.. Atienza is helping pacquaio? NO.. He is using pacquiao for his own interest in politics... Any way, lets not talk about pacquiao because he is nothing. Lets talk about morales-corrales fight.. Is it posible Mr. Marley? For sure it will rock all of us.

What if pacquiao will run for a senator in 2010?
Answer: He will be KO again because his adviser GACAL is damn.

thats good if GBP have no chance to stop the fight of pacman and and solis..BUT I DONT KNOW WHY BOB ARUM AND DELAHOYA FIGHTING WHO WILL BE THE RIGHT TO PROMOTE PACMAN.WE KNOW THE HARDSHIP THAT PACMAN TAKE BEFORE HE GET THIS FAMOUS NAME IN BOXING..HE DESERVE TO HAVE A GOOD OR LET SAY BESTFIGHT. GBP AND TOP RANK ARE LEECHES WHO KEEPSUCKING BLOOD. THEY WANT ONLY MONEY FOR PACMAN... ITS BETTER THEY GIVE AND TAKE, OR HELPING EACH OTHER. SO EVRERYBODY IS HAPPY.

SO I THINK BETTER GIVE PACMAN OR OTHER BOXER A GOOD FIGHT AND ALSO A GOOD MONEY FIGHT.BECAUSE PACMAN IS IN HIS BEST ATLEAST MAT BE FOR 3-5 YEARS MORE. SO GBP AND TOP RANK GIVE PACMAN A GOODFIGHT GIVE HIM THE GOOD OPPONENT LIKE MARQUES OR WHO WILL BE THE RIGHT OPPONENT FOR PACMAN.. IF YOU DO THAT EVERY BODY IS HAPPY. AND EVERY BODY WANTS BIG MONEY FIGHT . WE WILL SEE WHOS THE BEST FIGHTER AT THIS TIME..

WE CANNOT BLAME PACMAN TO ENTER POLOTICS. BECAUSE THIS IS HIS CHOICE.WE THINK THIS IS WRONG FOR HIM, BUT WE ARE WRONG.WE DONT KNOW WHAT PACMAN THINKING AND WHAT HE CAN DO. JUST LET HIM TO DO WHAT HE WANTS IN HIS LIFE...OK

You don't have to be a lawyer to understand that Golden Boy's injunction case has no merit at all. It's so obvious that Golden Boy is just out there to harass Pacquiao. By now, Golden Boy should know that boxing is not its monopoly.

I just thought of something about the author Kimoy's statements. Is that the same Nathanielz who wrote articles about the WBO officials who came to rob Z Gorres of the fight in Cebu? That may not be too objective on his part. I believe that our boxer was really running out of gas and if the officials erred it was not about to strip the champion of his belt. Remember that there use to be 15 rounds in championship fights! And for our boxing best bet? Still Manny 'cause he never run out of gas and keep moving forward. I wish him the win all the way to his desire as a Congressman. His desire to help the poor is noble and my prayers for Manny.
